Metabolic syndrome is sometimes referred to as Syndrome X. Syndrome X treatment usually consists of lifestyle changes that reduce insulin resistance in the body. Diet and exercise are central components in Syndrome X treatment.

If an individual has any three of the following criteria, they are usually diagnosed with metabolic syndrome (Syndrome X):

  1. Abdominal obesity: a waist circumference of over 102 cm (40 in) in men and over 88 cm (35 in) in women.
  2. Serum triglycerides: levels of 150 mg/cl or above.
  3. Blood pressure: levels of 130/85 or more.
  4. HDL cholesterol: levels of 40 mg/dl or lower in men and 50 mg/dl or lower in women.
  5. Fasting blood glucose: levels of 110 mg/dl or above

Syndrome X treatment usually consists of weight reduction which is handled through diet, exercise, and sometimes the use of medication. A Mediterranean diet is commonly maintained because it is rich in “good” fats and contains a reasonable amount of carbohydrates and proteins. This diet consists of:

  • A high consumption of fruits and vegetables, breads and other cereals, potatoes, beans, nuts and seeds.
  • Olive oil
  • Dairy products, fish and poultry consumed at low or moderate amounts.
  • Small amounts of red meat.
  • Omega-3 eggs
  • Low amounts of wine

An exercise regiment of 30 minutes a day 5 days a week is usually recommended. This will decrease blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and insulin sensitivity. Cosmetic surgery is sometimes recommended to remove fat as a Syndrome X treatment.

Triple X Syndrome Treatment

Tripple X syndrome is not the same as Syndrome X. Triple X syndrome is a condition that result that occurs from an error that occurs in the formation of an egg cell or a father’s sperm. Symptoms may include a tall stature, a small head, vertical skinfolds covering the corner of the eyes, delayed development of motor skills, speech and language, learning disabilities, and weak muscle tone. Complications may involve ovary abnormalities, seizures, and kidney abnormalities

Cardiac Syndrome X Treatment

Drugs for cardiac Syndrome X treatment include channel blocker and beta blockers. Calcium channel blockers relax the muscle cells that line the artery. This improves blood flow to the heart and lowers blood pressure. They also reduce episodes of chest pain. Beta blocker relieve chest pain in 2/3 of the patients with Syndrome X.

An antidepressant called Tofranil may be used to reduce pain perception. Women tend to develop Syndrome X during menopause, so hormone therapy may be necessary. Large trials have indicated that hormone therapy increase the risk of heart attack and blood clots, and there is no evidence to prove whether chest pain relief outweigh these problems or not.
